TOURNAMENTS HELPS RECORDS
The outstanding tournament success in the mid-1990’s resulted in most of the Panthers’ individual offensive records, with the obvious help of more games played. All the team defensive records were set in 1968 and 1970 by teams that helped launch the 60-game winning streak.
NFL quarterback Rex Grossman owns most of the passing records, eight by himself and tied for a ninth. These include the career yardage (7,518), touchdown (97) and completion (457) records and single season yardage (3,080), touchdown (44) and completion (178) records.
Ben Chappell owns the record for most yardage in a game, 399. Rex Grossman, Dobby Grossman (Rex’s uncle) and Chappell are tied for the record for touchdowns in a game, 6.
Nick Dunbar owns the career rushing record, 4,009, and season record, 1,891, and is tied with Rob Shirley for season touchdowns, 27. Dunbar is the career TD rushing record holder with 58 and the career touchdown scoring record holder with 60.
Tyler Thompson holds four of the six Panther receiving records. Those are season yardage, 1,110; career yardage, 2,375, career catches, 124, and career touchdowns, 34. Jordan Forney owns the season catches record, 60, and Tom Hayes the season touchdown record, 14.
Jared Fritz has four of the six place kicking records: season points, 86 career points, 201; season PATs, 71, and career PATs, 162. Spencer Whitehead set the season field goal record of 12 and career field goal record of 20. Three of the Panther defensive records were set in 1968 and three in 1970. The 1968 team allowed the fewest points, 19; the fewest total yards, 618, and fewest touchdowns, one. The 1970 team allowed the fewest touchdowns by passing, one; the fewest rushing yards, 249, and the fewest passing yards, 369.
